Clinician: John Phelan
John Phelan is a native of Harvey, LA, and a graduate of Brother Martin High School and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He currently serves as Director of Bands at Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies in Metairie, LA, where he oversees all aspects of both the Middle School and High School Band programs. His ensembles have regularly earned high marks in marching, concert and jazz festivals, and his students consistently earn placements in local, regional, state, and national honor ensembles.
Mr. Phelan began the Marching Band program at Haynes Academy upon his arrival in 2021, and led the Band in 2025 to their first-ever appearance at the LMEA District VI Marching Assessment, earning Excellent and Superior ratings. He has also established a Middle School Percussion Ensemble at Haynes Academy, which has earned consistent Superior ratings at the Jefferson Parish Superintendent's Assessment.
Mr. Phelan has held teaching positions in Jefferson, Iberia, and Vermilion parishes, where his Bands have been selected to perform at prestigious venues including Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World. He has taught students from first grade through high school, and served for two years as Music Director and Conductor of the Iberia Community Band in New Iberia, LA.
Mr. Phelan is an accomplished percussionist, performing regularly with community bands and other ensembles across South Louisiana. He was a member of the two-time world champion Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, where he was privileged to study with Dr. John Wooton, Jeff Prosperie, and Marty Hurley.
Mr. Phelan is an outspoken advocate for Music Education, and encourages everyone reading this to immediately reach out to your school and district leaders, and express to them your support for Music Education in every school, and for every student!
Mr. Phelan would like to thank his students for inspiring him every day, and for (occasionally) laughing at his jokes.

Location: De La Salle High School (5300 St Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70115)
Room: Music Rooms
Audition Process: We utilize a "blind" audition process to ensure fairness, meaning judges will hear the student's performance without seeing or knowing their identity. Students will be assigned an audition number upon arrival. No names will be used with the judge. Students will perform the required scales and etudes with judges focusing solely on tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, and musicality. Using a rubric ensures selection is based purely on musical merit and preparation.
Audition Results will be posted to this page 1 - 2 days after the auditions.
Final Registration will be posted after audition results are out.
Performance Fee: $20.00 (includes an Honor Band T-Shirt) - payable with Cash, Check, Card, or Apple Pay
Payment is due by the first rehearsal of Honor Band Weekend.
There is NO READING REHEARSAL this year (2025-26).
The Reading Rehearsal is optional, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This rehearsal offers a valuable opportunity to refine individual parts and connect with fellow musicians, ensuring everyone feels confident and prepared for the Honor Band Weekend rehearsals.

Lunch Notes - NEW!
This year, we will be providing lunch on Saturday. While we aim to accommodate as many needs as possible, we may not be able to offer options for all dietary restrictions. If your child has specific dietary requirements, please plan to send any necessary food items with them.
Food delivery services (Uber eats, etc.) have been extremely unreliable when delivering to this location. In the past, food arrived so late that students weren't able to eat until much later in the day. We strongly encourage you to bring your own lunch/snacks in addition to our provided meal if necessary.
Concert Attire:
"Sunday Best" or Semi-formal attire
Appropriate tops
Slacks or modest skirts/dresses
Please NO jeans, shorts, t-shirts, logos, tennis shoes, etc.
Note: We want to ensure a professional and respectful appearance for all performances. Please be aware that audience members in the front rows may have an upward viewing angle. Therefore, if your concert attire includes a skirt or dress that is above the knee, you must wear opaque tights underneath to maintain appropriate modesty. Your attention to this detail is greatly appreciated.
